Wellesley Dominates Mount Holyoke Invitational

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. -- The Mount Holyoke College swimming and diving team hosted longtime rivals Smith College and Wellesley College today at its home invitational. Wellesley dominated the non-scoring meet, taking 13 of the 21 events. Mount Holyoke came away with six victories, while Smith totaled two.

Leading the way for the Blue was Carolyn Jackson, who figured in on five wins. In addition to tapping the wall first in the 50-yard (32.67), 100-yard (1:12.58) and 200-yard (2:28.99) breaststroke races, the sophomore also contributed to a pair of relay triumphs. After winning the 400-yard medley relay (4:19.60) along with senior Allie Williams, senior Alexandra Cahill and sophomore Karina Chung, she combined with Chung, first year Maria Amirkhanashvili and first year Megan Lambert to post the top time in the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:52.33).

Amirkhanashvili, Williams and Lambert also added two individual wins apiece for Wellesley. Amirkhanashvili came out on top in both the 50-yard (28:15) and 100-yard (1:04.39) butterfly races, while Williams captured first place in the 100-yard (1:04.59) and 200-yard (2:18.02) backstroke competitions. Lambert secured top honors in the 100-yard (57.44) and 200-yard (2:06.65) freestyle events.

For Mount Holyoke, Lauren Williams figured in on four first place finishes to lead the way for the Lyons. In addition to taking top honors in both the 200-yard (2:22.91) and 400-yard (5:04.59) individual medleys, she also contributed to a pair of relay triumphs. After teaming up with Nora Cunningham, Madeline Magee and Lydia Bowers to post the top time in the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:44.08), she joined forces with Magee, Bowers and Sin Seanne Ng to win the 200-yard medley relay (1:58.42).

For Smith, Jenika Parson swept the diving events to lead the Pioneers. She posted scores of 392.10 on the 1-meter board and 409.85 on the 3-meter board, respectively. 

Over the course of the day, a total of 14 competitors took part in all 19 swimming events. Referred to as "Iron Women," Wellesley's representatives were Dana DuttonAnnie HamiltonVirginia Hung and Stephanie Welch.  In addition, Welch took it a step further and competed in the 1-meter diving event. 

All three squads will return to action during the new year after month long layoffs. Wellesley (3-2) is slated to host Babson College and the Coast Guard Academy on Wednesday, January 12 at 5:00 p.m. Meanwhile, Mount Holyoke (2-0) will entertain Clark University and Wheaton College on Friday, January 14 at 3:00 p.m., and Smith (2-1) will host Wellesley the following afternoon at 1:00 p.m.
