Blue Swimming and Diving Sinks Mount Holyoke

WELLESLEY, Mass. -- The Wellesley College swimming and diving team sank the Mount Holyoke College Lyons on Saturday afternoon at Chandler Pool.  The Blue defeated their NEWMAC-rival 168-127. The meet stayed close for the first five events, nearly exchanging wins, until Wellesley pulled ahead with several consecutive wins to seal the victory.

The lead swimmer lending to the advance of the Blue's record to 5-2 was sophomore Carolyn Jackson, winning both the 50-yard freestyle (26.21) and the 100-yard breaststroke (1:10.14), as well as contributing to best times in the 200-yard medley (1:56.00) and 200-yard freestyle relays (1:46.19).  Also in the 200-yard medley was senior Dana Dutton who took the 100-yard freestyle (57.29). Another speedy senior, Alex Cahill, took the 100-yard butterfly (1:05.30).

Not to be outdone, younger members of the team touched first too; first-year Anne Hamilton gained the 200-yard individual medley (2:19.85) while classmate Keelin Nave was the victor of both the 200-yard and 500-yard freestyle events (2:00.4 and 5:23.03 respectively). Sophomore Virginia Hung also contributed the 50-yard butterfly event (28.21).

Lead by members of the class of 2014, the Lyons (now 4-3) fought hard.  First-year Lauren Williams took the 100-yard backstroke (1:03.99), Sin Seanne Ng gained the 50-yard backstroke (30.17), while classmate Leah Townsend touched first in the 1000-yard freestyle (11:45.23). Sophomore Madeline Magee swam away with the 50-breaststoke (32.79).

In the diving events, the Blue were paced by first-year Hayley Goydan, who passed the NCAA qualifying mark with a score of 429.68 on the 1-meter board, and also took first on the 3-meter board with 232.19.  Sophomore Kathryn Goffin scored 339.57 on the 1-meter board, and 212.32 on the 3-meter board earning second place respectively. Sophomore Chelsea-Ann Patry recorded third in both events (296.17 in 1m and 192.90 in 3m).

Before the meet, senior members of both teams were honored in a brief ceremony with flowers and cheers.  The Blue's Captains - Alex Cahill, Dana Dutton, and Victoria Nichols are all members of the class of 2011. 
 
The Blue will be back at Chandler pool for double the action, swimming against Babson College and the Coast Guard Academy on Tuesday, February 1.
