Swimming and Diving Downs Clark and Roger Williams

WELLESLEY, Mass. – The Wellesley College swimming and diving team picked up wins over Clark University and Roger Williams University on Saturday afternoon in a double-dual meet at Chandler Pool. The Blue went 2-0 with a 186-98 win over Clark and a 154-135 win over Roger Williams. The Hawks picked up a win, defeating Clark, 200-94, while in the men's meet, Roger Williams defeated Clark, 140-111.

Wellesley won 12 of the 14 women's swimming events contested, led by first-year Dorothy Ren who picked up four total victories and broke another school record in the process. Ren touched first in the 100-fly (58.84), the 100-back (1:00.52), and the 200-IM (2:13.84), while also recording the fastest time as a member of the 200 medley relay team. Her school record came on the first leg of the medley relay team, as she recorded a 50-back time of 27.39.

Also recording multiple event wins for Wellesley were junior Mariam Amirkhanashvili, sophomore Monica Gates and first-year Ieva Galinyte. Amirkhanashvili picked up individual wins in the 100-free (55.61) and 200-free (2:01.18), while also swimming the first leg of the winning 200-free relay. Galinyte won the 500-free (5:15.65) and the 1000-free (10:53.06), and was also a winner in the 200-free relay.

Gates posted two relay wins, combining with Ren, sophomore Kendra Waters and first-year Suman Kumar to open the meet with a winning time of 1:53.49 in the 200-yard medley relay team. Gates then paired with Amirkhanashvil, Galinyte and first-year Charlotte Harris, to post a time of 1:43.65, touching first in the 200-medley relay.

Also recording individual wins for the Blue were first-years Theresa Mitchell and Emily Sotomayor and junior Gabriela Kovacikova. Mitchell won the 200-fly in 2:17.44, Sotomayor touched first in the 100-breast (1:09.57) and Kovacikova was the 200-back winner (2:15.73).

In the diving events, Wellesley sophomore Gabby Cooper-Vespa took third in the 1-meter event with a 197.80, while taking second in the 3-meter with a 210.85. Blue senior also competed well, placing fourth on the 3-meter board and fifth on the 1-meter board. 

Wellesley swimming and diving next heads to MIT on Friday, taking on the Engineers at 7:00pm. The Blue are back at home on Saturday, taking on Simmons College at 2:00pm.
