#6 MIT tops Blue Swimming and Diving

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- The Wellesley College swimming and diving team fell to sixth-ranked MIT on Friday evening at the Zesiger Sports and Fitness Center. The nationally-ranked Engineers used considerable depth en route to 179-62 win over the Blue, improving MIT to 2-0 on the season, while the Wellesley dropped its first dual meet of the season, moving to 2-1.

Wellesley was paced by first-year Ieva Galinyte, who picked up a win and a second place finish in the meet. The rookie took top honors in the 1,000-free, recording a time of 10:46.21, just over a second off of the school record. Galinyte also finished second in the 500-free, recording a time of 5:17.34. 

Also recording individual top-finishes for the Blue were first-years Dorothy Ren, Charlotte Harris and Emily Sotomayor. Ren placed second in the 100-fly, recording a 58.93. She also finished third in the 200-IM, with her time of 2:13.52 standing under a second off the school record mark. Harris and Sotomayor each recorded third place finishes on the night, as Harris swam the 200-free in 2:00.45, and Sotomayor finished the 100-back in 1:09.88.

Wellesley's 200-yard medley relay also fared well, recording a second-place finish in a strong field. Ren led off the relay, and was joined by sophomore Kendra Waters, junior Mariam Amirkhanashvili and sophomore Monica Gates, as the team posted a time of 1:52.19.

At the diving end of the pool, Wellesley's Gabby Cooper-Vespa recorded two second-place finishes, while senior Kathryn Goffin earned third and fifth-place finishes. Cooper-Vespa tallied 218.69 points on the 1-meter board, while scoring a 211.80 on the 3-meter board. Goffin scored a 172.5 on the 1-meter and a 183.97 on the 3-meter to round out the meet.

Wellesley has little down time before jumping back into the pool tomorrow afternoon. The Blue will host Simmons in a dual meet at Chandler Pool, beginning at 1:00pm.
