Blue Swimming and Diving Falls to Deep Tufts Squad

MEDFORD, Mass. – The Wellesley College swimming and diving team fell 171-127 to Tufts University on Wednesday evening. The swimming portion of the event took place at Tufts' Hamilton Pool, while Wellesley hosted the diving events at Chandler Pool.

The Blue recorded six total wins, but it wasn't enough to top a deep Tufts squad that stood at nearly 50 swimmers. Wellesley was paced by first-year Dorothy Ren and sophomore Gabby Cooper-Vespa, who each recorded two wins for the Blue, while first-year Ieva Galinyte and junior Gabriela Kovacikova were the other two victorious Wellesley athletes.

Ren touched first in both the 100-back (1:01.06) and 100-fly (58.76), while also finishing second in the 200-IM (2:18.75). Cooper-Vespa was the winner in both diving events, recording personal bests on both the one-meter (232.64) and three-meter (225.00) boards.

Galinyte was the winner in the 1,000-free, recording a time of 11:01.88, while placing second in the 500-free in 5:25.25. Kovacikova won the 200-back in a time of 2:16.83, and followed by sophomore Tiffany Chen who finished second in the event in 2:17.37.

Also for the Blue, first-year Charlotte Harris recorded two second-place finishes, while senior Kathryn Goffin and first-years Emily Sotomayor and Erin Yang notched one each. Harris was second in the both the 200-free (2:00.13) and the 200-breast (2:34.49). Goffin was second on the one-meter board (181.27) and took third on the three-meter board (186.30). Rounding out the individual swims, Sotomayor was second in the 100-breast (1:10.75), while Yang was second in the 50-free (26.11).

In the relay events, Wellesley touched second in both the 200-medley and the 200-free. The medley team of Ren, sophomore Kendra Waters, junior Mariam Amirkhanashvili, and sophomore Monica Gates, recorded a time of 1:52.50, just over a half second off the pace of Tufts. The free relay team of Yang, Harris, Galinyte and Gates recorded a time of 1:44.01.

Wellesley next competes at Mount Holyoke College's Pioneer Invitational on Saturday.
