Swimming and Diving Sweeps Coast Guard & Babson; Goydan Hits Qualifying Mark

WELLESLEY, Mass. – The Wellesley College swimming and diving team swept a double-dual meet against visiting Coast Guard and Babson. The Blue topped the Bears, 203-96, and defeated Babson, 146-101. Elsewhere, Coast Guard swam past Babson, 209-87, while in the men's meet, Coast Guard topped Babson, 156-138.

Wellesley (5-2) came out on top of 12 of the 16 women's events, while Coast Guard (3-5) won two. Babson (1-7) picked up two second-place finishes to round out the women's scoring. On the men's side, Coast Guard (6-1) and Babson (3-3) picked up eight victories each. 

For the Blue, five athletes picked up victories, led by first-year Dorothy Ren who touched first in three events. Other multiple winners included juniors Hayley Goydan and Gabriela Kovacikova, and first-year Charlotte Harris. Wellesley also got a win from junior Anne Hamilton and swept the relay events. 

Ren picked up wins in the 100-fly (58.61), the 200-fly (2:10.83), and the 200-IM (2:15.59), while Goydan won both diving events, including hitting an NCAA cut on the 1-meter board. Competing in her first meet of the season after a semester abroad, she recorded a 262.40 on the 1-meter board, while on the 3-meter she hit a 246.20.

Kovacikova won both of the back stroke events, recording a 1:01.99 in the 100-back and a 2:13.22 in the 200-back. Harris swept the breast stroke events, recording a 1:09.74 in the 100 and a 2:33.77 in the 200. Rounding out the winners for the Blue, Hamilton recorded a 5:24.72 to take the 500-free. 

Rounding out the highlights for Wellesley, the Blue won both the relay events. In the 200-medley relay, Kovacikova, first-year Emily Sotomayor, Ren, and junior Mariam Amirkhanashvili combined for a 1:54.04. In the 400-free relay, Harris, Sotomayor, sophomore Monica Gates, and Amirkhanashvili teamed up to record a 3:46.49.

For Coast Guard, Sophomore Darlene Sao picked up three wins on the afternoon to pace the Bears. She won the 50-free (25.79), the 100-free (55.38), and the 200-free (1:59.31) to account for 27 of the team's points. Also for the Bears, first-year Haley McWilliams won the 1,000-free with a time of 10:58.64, while taking second in the 500 in 5:25.40.

For Babson, Erica Riccardi led the way with a pair of second place finishes. She touched second in both backstroke events, recording a 1:03.25 in the 100 and a 2:15.00 in the 200. Also for the Beavers, junior Mikaela Cucullo took second in the 1-meter diving event, recording a 222.95.

On the men's side, Coast Guard sophomore Christian Brindamour picked up three wins on the night, while Andrew Anderson swept the diving events for the Bears. Brindamour won the 50-free in 21.54, took the 100-free in 48.24 and recorded a 55.16 in the 100-back. Anderson won the 1-meter event with a 235.60 and recorded a 239.35 on the 3-meter board. 

Also for Coast Guard, Ben Morseth won the 200-back in 2:06.18, while Barrett Johannsen posted a 53.75 to win the 100-fly. The Bears also won the 400-free relay, as junior Alex Dona, sophomore Adam Hoburg, senior Michael Piatedosi, and Brindamour combined  for a time of 3:16.81.

For the Babson men, first-year An Truong picked up three event wins, while classmate Austen Noh recorded two victories. Truong won the 200-fly (1:58.75), the 500-free (4:49.06) and the 1,000-free (9:54.09), while Noah swept the breaststroke events, recording a 1:03.38 in the 100 and a 2:18.19 in the 200. 

Also for the Beavers, junior Isaac Breen-Franklin won the 200-free and first-year Chris Roan won the 200-IM in 2:05.73. Wrapping up the wins for Babson, the 200-medley relay team posted a 1:42.17, as senior Gregory Bissett, junior Steve Jacobi, Roan, and senior Mike Flaherty, combined for the victory.

Up next for Wellesley, the Blue will travel to Smith to take on the Pioneers on Saturday at 1:00pm. Babson next swims tomorrow at Gordon at 4:00pm, while Coast Guard will host MIT on Saturday at noon.
