Wellesley Swimming & Diving Cruises To 184-114 Win Over Smith
Northampton, Mass. – Wellesley College swimming & diving won 10 of 16 events to cruise to a 184-114 victory over host Smith College in a New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) dual meet on Saturday at Dalton Pool.
The Blue are now 5-1 in dual meets on the season and 1-0 at home. Smith slips to 3-6 on the year and 0-2 at home.
Sophomore Hannah May (Cincinnati, Ohio) and senior Jessie Feng (Princeton, N.J.) combined for five of Wellesley's 10 event victories on the afternoon, with May winning a meet-high three events. May opened with a 100 Back (1:04.56) victory before showing off her versatility in freestyle, winning the 50 Free (26.00) sprint and the 500 Free (5:30.66) distance race. Feng was the winner in both the 200 Free (2:02.08) and the 100 Fly (1:02.44).
A trio of Blue first years picked up victories to clinch the meet. Allie Chiou (Chandler, Ariz.) took first in the 100 Breaststroke (1:13.67), while classmate Peyton Wang (Palo Alto, Calif.) won the 100 Free (56.73) and Jessica Wegner (Taipei, Taiwan) was first in the 200 Back (2:18.55). Junior Danielle Peterson (Livingston, N.J.) earned the final individual victory for the Blue, winning the 200 IM in 2:20.74. Chiou and Wegner also teamed with junior Maggie Haley (Shady Side, Md.) and senior Sunny Chiang (Troy, Mich.) to win the 400 Medley Relay (4:21.16).
Seniors Desi Stoyanova (Plovdiv, Bulgaria) and Julianna Alvord (Ivoryton, Conn.) each earned a pair of event wins to lead Smith. Stoyanova was first in both 200 Fly (2:24.11) and the 200 Breaststroke (2:42.62), while Alvord won on both the 1-meter (202.10) and 3-meter diving (175.50) boards. Sophomore Charlotte Crandall (Lawrence, Kan.) added a victory in the 1000 Free (11:43.45). Crandall was also part of the Smith team that closed the meet with a victory in the 200 Free Relay, posting a time of 1:47.15.
Both squads will return to Smith next weekend for the 2019 Seven Sisters Championships on Saturday and Sunday, January 19-20.
