Wegner Earns NCAA B Cut as Wellesley Places 5th at MIT Invitational

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- Wellesley College swimming & diving finished in fifth place out of seven teams at the three-day MIT Invitational inside the Zesiger Center pool.

Tufts University took first place with 1753 total points and MIT placed second with 1634 points. In third was Wheaton (730), followed by RPI (583) and Wellesley (429). Rounding out the competition was Keene State with 178 points and Simmons scoring 58.

Jessica Wegner (Taipei, Taiwan) earned her first individual win of the invitational in the 100 Fly. The senior took first with a swim of 56.02, which was fast enough to qualify for an NCAA B cut. 

The Blue had two foursomes compete in the 200 Medley Relay, with Mellany Smith (West Orange, N.J.), Ariana Mitsuoka (Centennial, Co.), Wegner, and McKaela Glanville (Menlo Park, Calif.) posting a 1:50.50 and earning 12th place. Mira Tang (Mercer Island, Wash.), Maya Hart (Menlo Park, Calif.), Cecilia Cai (Palo Alto, Calif.), and Marisa Papagelis (Westborough, Mass.) finished in 1:54.70.

Senior Paulina Gonzalez (Caracas, Venezuela) and Hart finished next to each other in the 500 Free, with Gonzalez clocking a 5:33.30 and Hart a 5:37.98. 

Five different Blue teammates competed in the 200 Back, with Tang earning the fastest time at 2:13.49 for 13th place. Smith finished in 2:15.99, Julia Lucey (Old Greenwich, Conn.) in 2:16.94, Cai in 2:18.92, and Papagelis in 2:20.06.

Sophomore Eugenia Ma (Princeton, N.J.) finished just outside of the top-10 in the 200 Breast, swimming a solid 2:30.65. Classmate Alice Johnson (Seattle, Wash.) was two spots behind and clocked a 2:33.82. 

In the 100 Free event, Mitsuoka placed 12th with a time of 53.59 seconds. Wegner also placed inside the top-20 with a final time of 54.73 seconds.

For the 200 IM, Glanville was the top Blue finisher with a time of 2:13.35 and earned 15th place. In the top-20 was Wegner at 2:16.02 and Shelby Ripp (St. Louis, Mo.) at 2:22.25.

The Blue wrapped up the day in the 400 Free Relay with Mitsuoka, Glanville, Wegner, and Cai as the top Wellesley finishers at 3:38.69.
