Sekhon Wins 100 Breaststroke on Third Day of NEWMAC Swimming & Diving Championships

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Wellesley College swimming & diving sophomore Kavita Sekhon (Los Angeles, Calif.) won the 100 Breaststroke event to earn NEWMAC First Team All-Conference honors on Saturday at the NEWMAC Championships, held at MIT's Zesiger Center Pool. Sekhon's time of 1:02.37 shattered her own program record and was good for an NCAA "B" cut. The Blue remain in fifth out of the 10 in the team competition.

Host MIT is in first place in the team competition with 1028.5 points. Coast Guard holds the second spot with 513 points and Wheaton is third with 486. Springfield (485.5.), Wellesley (414), WPI (317), Babson (196), Smith (192), Mount Holyoke (173) and Clark (154) round out the field.

In addition to Sekhon, sophomore Lara Dashti (Kuwait) and senior Ariana Mitsuoka (Centennial, Colo.) both qualified for the "A" finals of the 100 Breaststroke. Dashti scored eighth with a time of 1:06.56. Mitsuoka was right behind in ninth with a time of 1:06.68.

Sophomore Tracey Liu (Princeton, N.J.) snagged the 100 Back bronze with a time of 57.15 in the "A" finals. In the prelims, Liu received an NCAA "B" cut with a time of 56.74. Senior Mira Tang (Mercer Island, Wash.) had a time of 58.32, good for eighth in the race.

The 200 Medley Relay A team of Liu, Sekhon, sophomore Aubrey Cantrell (Palo Alto, Calif.) and Mitsuoka finished third and snatched an NCAA "B" cut with a time of 1:44.06.

Senior McKaela Glanville (Menlo Park, Calif.) qualified for the "A" finals in the 100 Fly. The senior took eighth with a time of 58.21. Tang swam a time of 59.76 to take fourth in the "B" finals. Junior JJ Kim (New Haven, Conn.) also competed in the "B" finals and came in ninth with a time of 1:01.22.

 and senior Mona Li (Cary, N.C.) each made the "B" finals in the 200 Free. Cantrell claimed third with a time of 1:57.84. Li's time of 1:59.60, a personal record, was good for fifth.

In the 200 Medley Relay "B" finals, Tang, Dashti, Cai and Glanville had a time of 1:48.83 to collect bronze.

In the 100 Breaststroke "B" finals, first year Chelsea Park (Long Beach, Calif.) was eighth with a time of 1:09.7. Right behind Park was teammate Maya Hart (Menlo Park, Calif.) with a time of 1:10.07.

Junior Cecilia Cai (Palo Alto, Calif.) registered a time of 4:37.81 to claim seventh place in the 400 IM "A" finals. Junior Julia Lucey (Old Greenwich, Conn.) took part in the 400 IM "B" finals and finished eighth with a time of 4:52.48.

The final day of the NEWMAC Championships starts tomorrow with prelims at 10:00 AM and finals at 6:00 PM.
