Blue Tennis Opens Spring Season by Topping Kalamazoo

KISSIMMEE, Fla. -- The Wellesley College tennis team opened the spring portion of their season with a decisive 8-1 victory over Kalamazoo College at Elm Street Park in Kissimmee, Fla. The win improves the Blue to 10-3 overall, while the Hornets fall to 3-5.

Wellesley opened play taking two out of the three doubles flights. At one, senior Jacqueline Shen and junior Marie Watanabe paired up for an 8-4 victory over Kari Larson and Kelsey Moran, while at two, senior Nathalie Herman and first-year Diana Granger dispatched Jenna Riehl and Paula Silverman, 8-4.

Kalamazoo got a point back at third doubles where Kesley Hassevoort and Kate Farwell were 8-5 winners over Wellesley first-years Kendall Tada and Erica Choo.

With a 2-1 lead after doubles, Wellesley swept the singles competition to seal the 8-1 victory. The Blue were solid with all players winning in two sets and no one allowing more than four points against them.

At one, Shen was a 6-2, 6-0 winner over Hassevoort, Watanabe won 6-0, 6-2 over Larson at two and Choo was a 6-2, 6-2 winner over Moran. At the bottom half of the ladder, Herman blanked Riehl at four, Granger beat Farwell, 6-2, 6-4 at five, and Tada was a 6-2, 6-3 winner over Silverman at six.

The Blue are back in action tomorrow morning, taking on Luther College at 1:30pm.
