Wellesley, Vassar Lead Field after Day One of Seven Sisters Tennis

WELLESLEY, Mass. – Host Wellesley College and Vassar College each went 2-0 to lead the field on day one of the 2011 Seven Sisters Tennis Championship. Both the Blue and the Brewers racked up 10 points tie for first place going into day two of the tournament. Mount Holyoke sits in third place with five points, while Bryn Mawr and Smith were held scoreless.

All five of the day one matches ended with scores of 5-0.

The tournament opened with a Vassar sweep of Bryn Mawr. In singles, Jennifer Beckerman picked up a 6-0, 6-0 win over Eliza Perocchi at one, Joy Backer defeated Jenny Vogel 6-1, 6-1 at two, and Jennifer Ruther blanked Zoe Odenwalder 6-0, 6-0 at three. At one doubles, Nicole Block and Alyssa Roush defeated Caitlin Finn and Marianne Leung, 6-1, 6-1, while at two, Natalie Santiago and Lindsay Kantor defeated Vivian Chen and Elizabeth Olecki, 6-2, 6-1.

Next up was a Wellesley sweep of Smith. In singles, Marie Watanabe won 6-0, 6-1 over Rachel Canfora, at one, Erica Choo was a 6-2, 6-0 winner over Eunice Zhao at two, and Kendall Tada won 6-3, 6-1 over Allie Ryan at three. Doubles featured a 6-0, 6-1 win for Jacqueline Shen and Diana Granger over Maggie Steiner and Allyson Hawkins at one, while Nathalie Herman and Raji Nagalla defeated Nawal Mays and Meghan Smith, 6-2, 6-0 at two.

Mount Holyoke then earned five points with a sweep over Bryn Mawr. Singles play featured the tightest match of the day at one, where Nahree Han pulled out a 1-6, 7-5, 6-4 win over Perocchi. Elsewhere, Elise Marifian defeated Vogel 6-0, 6-1, at two, and Sayarath won 6-1, 6-0 over Odenwalder. In doubles, Natalie Hsiang and Sarah Moore defeated Finn and Leung, 6-0, 6-4 at one, and AnnElizabeth Konke and Heather Richardson won 7-5, 6-3 over Chen and Olecki at two.

Vassar closed out its day one action with a sweep over Smith. The Brewers allowed only one singles point against them as Beckerman defeated Canfora, 6-0, 6-0 at one, Backer defeated Zhao, 6-1, 6-0 at two, and Ruther defeated Ryan, 6-0, 6-0 at three. In doubles, Block and Roush defeated Steiner and Hawkins, 6-1, 6-0, at one, and Kantor and Santiago defeated Mays and Smith, 6-0, 6-0 at two.

Closing out play on day one, Wellesley swept Mount Holyoke. Watanabe was a 6-1, 6-1 winner over Han at one, Choo won 6-3, 6-1 over Marifian at two, and Tada was a 6-1, 6-4 winner over Sayarath at three. In doubles, Shen and Granger defeated Hsiang and Moore at one, 6-2, 6-3, while Herman and Nagalla defeated Konkel and Richardson, 6-3, 6-0 at two.

Tomorrow's schedule features five more matches, including a 3:00pm contest between Vassar and Wellesley which will likely decide the team champion. In the last 12 years of the tournament, the Brewers and the Blue split six titles each.
