Tennis Opens NEWMAC Play with Sweep of Springfield

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- The Wellesley College tennis team opened up New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play, with a 9-0 sweep over Springfield College on the road. The win lifts the Blue to 2-0, while the Pride fall to 0-1.

Wellesley opened with a commanding performance in doubles action, sweeping all three flights. At one, senior Marie Watanabe and first-year Sojung Lee defeated Sam Carney and Jen Cleary, 8-0. In the second spot, sohomore Diana Granger and first-year Emily Bary teamed for an 8-1 victory over Erin Woodbury and at three, first-years Melissa Clark and Joyce Chen were 8-0 winners over Vanessa Senecal and Sydney Streimer.

In singles play, Wellesley again swept all flights to seal the 9-0 sweep. Clark was a 6-1, 6-0 winner over Carney at one, while Watanabe defeated Cleary, 6-0, 6-1 at two. At three, Choo was a 6-3, 6-0 winner over Woodbury and at four, Granger defeated Senecal, 6-0, 6-1. Rounding out singles play, Lee was a 6-0, 6-1, winner at five, while sophomore Kendall Tada was a 6-0, 6-0 winner at six.

Wellesley also won an exhibition doubles set, as sophomores Morgan Johnstonbaugh and Raji Nagalla defeated Amy Buttarazzi and Sarah Morgan, 8-5.

Wellesley continues its NEWMAC schedule next Saturday, traveling to Mount Holyoke for a 1:00pm start.
