#24 Wellesley Tennis Downs #22 MIT, 6-3

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- Strong doubles play sparked the #24 Wellesley College tennis team to a 6-3 victory over #22 MIT, in a match-up of unbeaten New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) teams, indoors on Tuesday evening. 

The victory improves the Blue to 6-1 overall, 5-0 in NEWMAC play, while MIT falls to 4-2 overall, 4-1 in the conference. 

Wellesley set the tone of the match early on, sweeping doubles play for a 3-0 advantage. At one, senior Marie Watanabe and first-year Sojung Lee paired for a thrilling 8-6 win over Lauren Quisenberry and Anastasia Vishnevetsky. At two, sophomore Diana Granger and first-year Emily Bary were 8-3 winners over Julia Hsu and Michelle Dutt. In the third flight, first-years Melissa Clark and Joyce Chen teamed up for an 8-4 victory over Vynnie Kong and Juana Becerra. 

In singles play, Wellesley got a win from sophomore Erica Choo at two and then a victory from Watanabe at one, to seal the team victory. Choo defeated Dutt, 6-4, 6-4, while Watanabe was a 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 winner over Quisenberry. Wellesley also got a point at six singles, where sophomore Kendall Tada earned a win due to injury default. 

In other singles action, MIT's Vishnevetsky defeated Clark, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, at three, while the Engineer's Hsu was a 7-6(7-3), 6-1 winner over Granger at four. In the five spot, MIT's Vynnie Kong defeated Lee, 6-3, 6-4. 

Wellesley is back in action on Saturday, hosting Smith College in a 1:00pm NEWMAC clash. MIT also plays on Saturday at 1:00pm, hosting Springfield.
