Wellesley Routs Smith in NEWMAC Match

WELLESLEY, Mass. – Wellesley College tennis captured a definitive 9-0 win on home courts against the Smith Pioneers Saturday afternoon.

The victory raises the Blue to 7-1 on the season, and 6-0 in NEWMAC play. Wellesley dropped only 27 games out of a total of 111 played. The Blue did not lose a set in any match.

In doubles, Wellesley's Diana Granger and Emily Bary fought out a close 8-6 battle in the first slot against Smith's Jaimi Inskeep and Clair Oblamski. Blue's Melissa Clark and Joyce Chen eased into an 8-1 win over Eunice Zhao and Bayla Weick at two, while Erica Choo and Kendall Tada defeated Rachel Canfora and Julia Signell 8-2 at three.

In singles, Marie Watanabe glided to a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Clair Oblanski at one. Choo was able to pull out a win after a tough second set, finishing Bayla Weick off with 6-1, 7-5 match at two. Frst-year Clark had a near perfect match at three, with a 6-0, 6-1 win over senior Inskeep. Granger found similar success at four, winning 6-0, 6-2 over Canfora. Tada and Morgan Johnstonbaugh finished off the ladder, beating Zhao 6-4, 6-0 at five and Grace McKay-Corkum at six, respectively.

Wellesley continues NEWMAC play at Babson this Tuesday afternoon in 3:00 pm match. Smith also plays a NEWMAC road match this week at Clark on Tuesday afternoon at 4:00 pm.
