Tennis Competes at Bowdoin Invitational

BRUNSWICK, Maine -- The Wellesley College tennis team competed this weekend at the 2011 Bowdoin Invitational. The event, featuring players from Bowdoin, Wellesley, Bates and Rochester, was an individual tournament with nine flights of singles play and four flights of doubles play.

In doubles, three of Wellesley's teams finished as flight runner-up. Senior Marie Watanabe and first-year Sojung Lee went 2-1 in flight one, with their only loss coming at the hands of the Bowdoin All-American duo of Kellen Alberstone and Kate Winingham. Sophomore Diana Granger and first-year Emily Bary, also went 2-1 to finish as flight two runner-up. In the third flight, first-years Melissa Clark and Joyce Chen also took second with a 2-1 record.

Also competing in doubles, Raji Nagalla and Kendall Tada each played matches with Bowdoin's Susanna Howards. Nagalla and her partner went 2-0 in the fourth flight, while Tada went 1-0.

In singles play, both Granger and Lee took second in their respective flights. Granger went 2-1 in flight three, while Lee went 2-1 in flight four. Watanabe went 1-2 in flight one, while Clark went 1-1 in flight two.

Also picking up wins in singles for the Blue were Chen, Tada, Morgan Johnstonbaugh and Elena Bowen.

The Wellesley tennis team now gears up for the 2011 NEWMAC Championship. The Blue, seeded first, received a first-round bye and will play the winner of #5 Mount Holyoke and #4 Wheaton on Saturday at 11:00am in the semifinals at Babson College.
