Blue Tennis Sweeps Springfield in NEWMAC Regular Season Finale

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- The Wellesley College tennis team used a dominant effort to sweep by NEWMAC-rival Springfield College, 9-0, on Saturday afternoon. The win improves Wellesley to 8-2 overall, 7-1 in the conference, while Springfield dips to 6-5 overall, 3-5 in NEWMAC play.

The Blue allowed just seven games against them in doubles to open with a 3-0 lead. In singles play Wellesley won each match in straight sets to seal the 9-0 sweep. 

In doubles, Wellesley's Sojung Lee and Carina Chen defeated Stephanie Foster and Rachel London, 8-2 at the top of the line-up. At two, the Blue's Andjela Stojkovic and Lina Ye blanked Melanie Thulin and Ariana Shemms, 8-0. Rounding out the doubles ladder, Wellesley's Kendall Tada and Samantha Stone paired up for an 8-5 win over Sydney Streimer and Alanna Grady.
 
In singles, Wellesley's Lee defeated London, 6-1, 6-0, at one, while at two, the Blue's Stojkovic was a 6-2, 6-1, winner over Streimer. At three, Wellesley's Ye topped Thulin, 6-2, 6-2, while at four, the Blue's Tada was a 6-3, 6-2 winner over Foster. At five, Wellesley's Dasha Kostikina topped Shemms, 6-1, 6-2, and at six, the Blue's Caroline Dickensheets was a 6-1, 6-3 winner over Grady. 

Wellesley tennis is back in action on Friday, October 18th, as the team heads to Maine for the three-day Bowdoin Invitational.  

Today's match marked the final NEWMAC regular season clash for the Blue. Wellesley finishes the NEWMAC slate ranked second and will be the number-two seed in the upcoming NEWMAC tournament, hosted by the Blue. 

By virtue of the second place finish, Wellesley receives a "bye" in the first round of the tournament and will play in the semifinals on Saturday, October 26th. The Blue will square off against the winner of #6 Springfield and #3 Wheaton. More tournament details will be available next week at wellesleyblue.com.
