#28 Wellesley Tennis Opens NEWMAC Play with Sweep of Smith

WELLESLEY, Mass. -- The Wellesley College tennis team posted a 9-0 sweep of Smith College on Saturday, opening the 2014 New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) season with a victory. The win lifts the Blue to 2-0, while the Pioneers start the season at 0-1.

Wellesley wasted little time in taking an early advantage. The Blue second doubles pair of sophomore Andjela Stojkovic and first-year Caroline Hsu cruised to an 8-0 victory over Seema Samawi and Margaret Anne Smith, while at three, Wellesley sophomore Samantha Stone and first-year Emily Olson paired up for an equally impressive 8-1 victory over Jordan Dublin and Samantha Peikes. At one, Blue senior Sojung Lee and sophomore Carina Chen finished off the doubles sweep with an 8-2 victory over Kelli Cheung and Ruth Yi, making it 3-0 Wellesley.

In singles, Wellesley got a pair of quick wins at two and six to earn the deciding points in the match. At two, Stojkovic was up 6-0, 5-0, before Samawi retired, while at six, Wellesley first-year Victoria Wu, was also leading 6-0, 5-0, before Poomi Arunachalam retired.

With the match decided, Wellesley rattled off two more quick wins at one and three to make it 7-0. At one, Lee was a 6-1, 6-0, winner over Cheung, while at three, Chen defeated Dubin, 6-2, 6-1.

The final two matches on court were the closest, as Wellesley sophomore Dasha Kostikina was battling Peikes at four, and Blue sophomore Caroline Dickensheets went three sets with Smith's Alexandra Steck. Kostikina won her first set 6-1, and then held off a late charge from Peikes to wrap up the eighth point for the Blue with a 6-4 second set win. At five, Dickensheets battled back from a first set loss (6-2), winning the second set 6-4, and taking the super set tiebreaker 10-7 to complete the Wellesley sweep.

Wellesley will have little rest before its next match, as the Blue head to Williams College to take on the Ephs tomorrow. Smith is back in action on September 14th, traveling to Babson for another NEWMAC clash.
