Blue Tennis Sweeps to 9-0 NEWMAC Victory over Mount Holyoke

WELLESLEY, Mass. – Wellesley College tennis swept to a 9-0 New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) victory over visiting Mount Holyoke College on Sunday afternoon at Dorothy Towne Fieldhouse, as inclement weather forced the match to be played indoors. The Blue improve to 3-1 (2-1 NEWAMC) overall, while the Lyons now stand at 4-1 (2-1 NEWMAC) following their first defeat of 2015.

Wellesley opened with a sweep of doubles play, as junior Carina Chen (Hong Kong) and first year Rosanne Hu (Troy, Texas) cruised to an 8-2 victory over Ishita Tibrewal (Kolkata, India) and Alexa Colas (Teaneck, N.J.) at #2 Doubles and junior Andjela Stojkovic (Victoria, British Columbia) and first year Tristan Lorich (New York, N.Y.) notched an 8-1 win at #3 Doubles, defeating Lyons' junior Amy Chen (Hilo, Hawaii) and first year Madison Rosen (Portland, Ore.). 

The #1 Doubles pairings battled throughout their match before Wellesley sophomore Emily Olson (La Jolla, Calif.) and first year Justine Huang (Coto de Caza, Calif.) were able to take an 8-6 victory over Mount Holyoke first year Ayame Yazawa (Tokyo, Japan) and senior Margaux Holloschutz (Franklin Lakes, N.J.) in the closest match of the day. 

Wellesley then went on to sweep the singles matches. Stojkovic took a 6-3 victory in the first set at #1 Singles, before Yazawa retired in the second set. Huang (6-2, 6-1 over Holloschutz) and Chen (6-0, 6-3 over Tiberwal) earned victories at #2 Singles and #3 Singles, respectively. 

Olson cruised to a perfect 6-0, 6-0 victory over Colas at #4 Singles, before the Blue closed out the match with victories by Lorich (6-1, 6-1 over first year Clara Wang (Madison, Conn.)) at #5 Singles and Hu (6-1, 6-3 over senior Michelle Cai (Hong Kong)) at #6 Singles. 

Wellesley tennis continues its NEWMAC schedule next Saturday, September 19, at 11:00 AM when the Blue host Clark. Mount Holyoke will also play its next NEWMAC match on Saturday, September 19, when they host MIT at 12:00 PM.
