Blue Tennis Takes 8-1 NEWMAC Win Over Emerson

WELLESLEY, Mass. – Wellesley College tennis took a 3-0 sweep in doubles and never looked back, earning an 8-1 New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) victory over visiting Emerson College on Tuesday evening at Wellesley College. 

The Blue are now 8-1 overall and 6-1 in NEWMAC action following their fifth consecutive victory in conference play. The Lions drop to 2-7 on the season and are winless in NEWMAC matches.

The reigning NEWMAC Doubles Team of the Week of senior Andjela Stojkovic (Victoria, British Columbia) and first year Sarah Yan (Holmdel, N.J.) got the Blue going with an 8-2 win at No. 1 doubles over Emerson first years Alisha Parikh and Sabrina Jacobs (Demarest, N.J.). Wellesley sophomore Rosanne Hu (Sugar Land, Texas) and first year Selina Peng (Taichung, Taiwan) followed with an 8-1 win over first year Rachel Scalera and sophomore Jamie CoConis (Ridgefield, Conn.) at No. 2, before sophomore Sojin Ki (Irvine, Calif.) and first year Korina Hernandez (Tampa, Fla.) finished off the doubles sweep with an 8-3 win over sophomore Tiziana Vazquez (Miami, Fla.) and first year Alex Weingarten (Carlsbad, Calif.) at No. 3.

Emerson earned their lone point in singles play, thanks to a 6-4, 1-6, 10-8 victory by Parikh at No 2 over Peng. However, the remaining singles matches belonged to the Blue.

Stojkovic cruised past Jacobs in the top pairing, 6-2, 6-4. Hernandez earned her second singles win in her last two matches with a 6-2, 6-1 win over CoConis at No. 3 and Ki swept past Scalera in straight sets at No. 4. Wellesley senior Dasha Kostikina (Acton, Mass.) and Caroline Dickensheets (Alpharetta, Ga.) added wins at No. 5 and No. 6 to close out the Blue victory. Kostikina defeated Weingarten, 6-2, 6-0, and Dickensheets topped Vazquez 6-0, 6-1.

Wellesley will wrap up the NEWMAC regular season on Saturday, October 8, versus Springfield at 11:00 AM. Emerson will host Bridgewater St. in non-conference play on Friday, October 7, at 3:30 PM.
