No. 33 Wellesley Tennis Falls To No. 18 Brandeis, 5-2

WALTHAM, Mass. -- No. 18 Brandeis University jumped out to a 3-0 lead after doubles play before clinching the match, 5-2, with a pair of singles victories against No. 33 Wellesley College tennis in non-conference play on Thursday at the Gosman Athletic Center.

Brandeis improves to 11-3 on the season with their third-straight victory. Wellesley is now 10-5 overall, having dropped back-to-back matches to top-25 opponents.

Brandeis first year Sabrina Ross Neergaard (Port Orchard, Wash.) and sophomore Olivia Leavitt (Falmouth, Maine) faced a test in No. 1 doubles, but came away with a 9-7 victory over Wellesley senior Carina Chen (Hong Kong) and sophomore Justine Huang (Coto de Caza, Calif.). The Judges closed out the doubles sweep when sophomore Sophia He (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) and junior Haley Cohen (Cherry Hill, N.J.) defeated Andjela Stojkovic (Victoria, British Columbia) and Sarah Yan (Holmdel, N.J.), 8-5, at No. 2 and sophomores Michele Lehat (Great Neck , N.Y.) and Keren Khromchenko (Manalapan, N.J.) defeated Rosanne Hu (Sugar Land, Texas) and Selina Peng (Taichung, Taiwan), 8-2, at No. 3.  

The Blue got on the board with a pair of singles wins at No. 2 and No. 3. Yan earned a three-set victory at No. 2, dropping her first set, 5-7, to Cohen, before outlasting the Brandeis junior 7-6 (6) to even the match in the second set. Yan then took the third set, 6-2, to earn the point for the Blue. At No. 3, Huang cruised past Khromchenko, 6-0, 6-2, to pick-up her second win of the week.

Despite the Blue wins at No. 2 and No. 3, Ross Neergaard and He finished the match for the Judges. Ross Neergaard took down Chen, 6-2, 6-3, at No. 1, before He swept through a third set to clinch the match for Brandeis with a 4-6, 7-5, 6-0, at No. 5.

Wellesley will head to Mount Holyoke on Saturday, April 8, for the 2017 Seven Sisters Championship. The Blue will open the tournament at 11:00 AM versus Smith. Brandeis will also be in action on Saturday when they travel to Trinity (Conn.) for a 3:00 PM match.
