Wellesley Tennis Opens Season at Williams' Morehouse Invitational

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. -- Wellesley College tennis opened the 2017-18 season on Saturday at Williams College's annual Lindsay Morehouse Invitational. The Blue matched-up in singles play against Middlebury and host Williams, while squaring off with Skidmore in doubles play.

The Morehouse Invitational is based on individual match play and encourages participation to kick off the start of a new season. However, each school plays their rounds of singles and doubles in the tournament in unison against an opponent so that all players from a school can be competing at the same time on adjacent courts.

Wellesley opened the day against Middlebury, going winless in six singles matches. First years Elizabeth Kong (Mason, Ohio), Michelle Buyer (Wilmette, Ill.), Lily Chu (Princeton, N.J.) and Abigail Schleichkorn (Pacific Palisades, Calif.) all made their Wellesley debuts in the match-up against the Panthers. Sophomore Selina Peng (Taichung, Taiwan) dropped a third set superbreaker, 10-5, to fall in close match 6-2, 3-6 (10-5) against Middlebury.

Wellesley bounced back in doubles play against Skidmore, earning a pair of victories. Schleichkorn and Lorich teamed for an 8-5 win, while Buyer and Chu also added an 8-5 victory. The Blue played the same lineup of singles players in their final round of play against host Williams, but also went winless against the defending national champions.

Wellesley will continue play at the Morehouse Invitational on Sunday, September 17, beginning at 9:00 AM.
