Blue Tennis Blanks Clark 9-0 to Begin Home Stand

WELLESLEY, Mass. -- Wellesley College tennis earned their second New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) victory of the season with a 9-0 win on Tuesday afternoon against Clark at Dorothy Towne Fieldhouse. Wellesley improves to 9-5 overall and 2-0 in conference action. Clark is now 2-6 on their season and 0-1 in the NEWMAC.

Wellesley junior, and NEWMAC Athlete of the Week, Justine Huang (Coto de Caza, Calif.) teamed with sophomore Selina Peng (Taichung, Taiwan) to earn the first victory of the day at No. 1 doubles, defeating first year Jillian Skulsky (Marshfield, Mass.) and sophomore Anna Gates (North Scituate, R.I.), 8-1. The Blue would go on to take a 3-0 lead after sweeping through doubles play.

In the No. 2 spot, first years Lily Chu (Princeton, N.J.) and Lizzy Kong (Mason, Ohio) took an 8-0 match against Clark junior Maggie Tarbox (Lebanon, Conn.) and sophomore Chloe Dunnell (Montclair, N.J.). Wellesley junior Sojin Ki (Irvine, Calif.) and first year Michelle Buyer (Wilmette, Ill.) then finished the doubles sweep with an 8-0 victory over senior Bichtroan Nguyen (Worcester, Mass.) and first year Elizabeth Tchantouridze (Northfield, Vt.).

Wellesley then powered through singles competition to take the 9-0 win over the Cougars. Huang held the advantage in her match, as she took her sets to 6-0, 6-1 over Gates at No. 1. Peng then edged Skulsky in a 6-2, 6-0 victory, while Kong held her sets to a 6-0, 6-0 advantage over Tarbox at No. 3.

Wellesley sophomore Korina Hernandez (Tampa, Fla.) earned her first victory of the day with set wins of 6-1, 6-1 over Tchantouridze at No. 4. Ki then defeated Nguyen in two sets at No. 5 and Chu finished the day with a victory against first year Zoe Chakoian (Viroqua, Wis.) at No. 6. Both matches ended with 6-0, 6-0 scores.

Wellesley will host Wheaton on Sunday April 8 at 11:00 AM. Clark will play again on Saturday April 7 at 10:30 AM at MIT.
