NYU Hands Wellesley Tennis First Setback of the Season, 8-1

BRONX, N.Y. – No. 18 New York University handed Wellesley College tennis the team's first setback of the 2018-19 season, defeating the Blue 8-1 in non-conference play on Saturday at the Stadium Tennis Center.

Wellesley, ranked No. 38 in the latest ITA/Division III Poll, is now 4-1 on the season. The Violets improve to 4-0 with a fourth straight victory to open the spring.

Junior Selena Peng (Taichung, Taiwan) earned Wellesley's only victory in the match, defeating junior Judy Kam (Beijing, China), 6-4, 6-4 at No. 4 singles. However, Peng's victory came at the same time the Violets clinched the match thanks to a 6-4, 6-0 victory by senior Vanessa Scott (Dix Hills, N.Y.) over Blue first year Cinji Lee (Seoul, South Korea) at No. 6 singles. 

NYU had a 3-0 lead heading into singles after sweeping the doubles matches. Senior Fleura Shiyanova (St. Legier, Vaud, Switzerland) and sophomore Anna Maria Buraya (Toronto, Canada) opened doubles play with an 8-2 victory over Wellesley senior Justine Huang (Coto de Caza, Calif.) and Peng in the top doubles match.

Junior Rupa Ganesh (San Jose, Calif) and sophomore Kate Shaffer (Ann Arbor, Mich.) helped close out the doubles sweep with an 8-4 win over first years Michaela Markwart (Hanover, Mass.) and Libby Chang (San Marino, Calif.) at No. 2. Scott and Kam followed with an 8-4 win at No. 3, defeating first years Michelle Shen (Dallas, Texas) and Lee. 

NYU took the remaining four singles matches to clinch the 8-1 win. Buraya defeat Huang at No. 1, 6-2, 7-5, while Ganesh downed Shen at No. 3, 6-3, 6-0. Wins by Shaffer (2-6, 7-6 (4), 11-9 over Chang at No. 5) and Shiyanova (7-6 (1), 6-3 over Markwart at No. 2) closed out the match.

Wellesley will look to rebound on Sunday at 11:00 AM when the Blue take on TCNJ in Ewing, N.J. NYU will also play on Sunday at 11:00 AM when they host Salisbury.
