Babson Downs Wellesley Tennis, 8-1

BABSON PARK, Mass. -- Sophomore Lily Chu (Princeton, N.J.) earned a victory at No. 6 singles but Wellesley College tennis dropped an 8-1 final to local rival Babson College in New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action on Wednesday afternoon at the Babson Tennis Courts.

Babson has now won seven straight matches to improve to 11-4 overall. The Beavers are unbeaten in conference play with a 7-0 mark. Wellesley is now 10-7 and 4-2 in NEWMAC play. 

Chu defeated first year Mary Kille (Simsbury, Conn.) in three sets, 4-6, 6-0, 10-4, at No. 6, but Babson had already clinched the match at the time of Chu's victory. The Beavers swept through doubles before victories at No. 4 and No. 2 singles helped the hosts to a 5-0 lead and the victory. 

In doubles, Babson sophomores Alexa Tutecky (North York, Ontario) and Nastasia Tamarkin (Washington, D.C.) defeated Wellesley junior Selina Peng (Taichung, Taiwan) and first year Libby Chang (San Marino, Calif.), 8-4, at No. 1. Sophomores Carolina Merz (Santa Tecla, El Savador) and Marissa Madison (Columbus, Ohio) topped senior Justine Huang (Coto de Caza, Calif.) and first year Michaela Markwart (Hanover, Mass.), 8-4, at No. 2, while junior Emily Roeper (Belle Mead, N.J.) and Kille closed out the sweep with an 8-6 win over Chu and first year Michelle Shen (Dallas, Texas).

Madison then defeated Shen, 6-2, 6-0, at No. 4 singles and Merz topped Peng, 6-2, 6-4, at No. 2 to put Babson up 5-0. In the remaining matches, Tutecky defeated Huang, 7-5, 6-4, at No. 1, Tamarkin topped Markwart, 3-6, 6-0, 10-6, at No. 3, and Roeper downed Chang, 6-4, 6-2, at No. 5.  

Wellesley will travel to Tufts for a 3:30 PM match on Friday, April 19, at 3:30 PM. Babson will host Endicott tomorrow, April 18, at 3:30 PM.
