Blue Tennis Drops 5-4 Battle to Whitman

TRINITY, Texas. – The Wellesley College tennis team dropped a tight 5-4 matchup with Whitman College on a neutral court in Trinity, Texas on Friday. 

The Blue got off on the right note by taking two of the three doubles matches. The reigning New England Women's and Men's Athletics Conference (NEWMAC) Doubles Team of the Week, Annissa Mu (Saratoga, Calif.) and Melinda Alviar (Indianapolis, Ind.), earned an 8-7 victory in the the No. 1 doubles over Angel Le (Bellevue, Wash.) and Arianna Castellanos (Guayaquil, Guayas, Ecuador). The Blue picked up its second victory in the No. 3 doubles with senior Michelle Shen (Dallas, Texas) and Celeste Tran (Los Altos, Calif.) defeating Irene Tsai (Cupertino, Calif.) and Ilina Jha (New Delhi, India) by a score of 8-4. Whitman got on the board with a win in the No. 2 doubles after Erica Mock (Littleton, Colo.) and Camilla Tarpey-Schwed (Mill Valley, Calif.) won 8-3 over seniors Michaela Markwart (Hanover, Mass.) and Libby Chang (San Marino, Calif.).

In the No. 1 singles match, Le defeated Markwart by a score of 6-2, 6-1. Mu would get one back for the Blue after taking down Castellanos 6-4, 6-3 in the No. 2 match. Shen then took control of the No. 3 match with a huge 6-4, 7-5 win over Jha. Whitman then closed out the match by winning the final three singles matches. Mock defeated Chang 6-1, 6-4, followed by Tarpy-Schwed 6-4, 6-2 over Alviar, and finally Tran fell 6-4, 6-1 in her first singles match of the season to Mae Thorp (Steamboat Spring, Colo.).

Wellesley will play again in Trinity against Gustavus Adolphus on Thursday, March 24 at 11:00 AM. Whitman will play a doubleheader on Saturday, March 19 versus Trinity and Schreiner University.
