Tennis Takes Down Gustavus Adolphus 5-4 from Trinity, Texas

TRINITY, Texas. – The Wellesley College tennis team picked up a 5-4 victory over Gustavus Adolphus on Thursday on the final day of the spring games from Trinity, Texas.

The Blue continued its success in the doubles by taking two of three to begin the match. Seniors Michaela Markwart (Hanover, Mass.) and Libby Chang (San Marino, Calif.) won their match 8-4 in the No. 2 doubles over Emily Norman (Rochester, Minn.) and Anna Stutz (Dellwood, Minn.). The duo of Michelle Shen (Dallas, Texas) and Celeste Tran (Los Altos, Calif.) kept the momentum rolling with a huge 8-2 win over Sydney Douglas (North Mankato, Minn.) and Renata Hernandez (Saint James, Minn.) in the No. 3 match. The three-time New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Doubles Team of the Week Annissa Mu (Saratoga, Calif.) and Melinda Alviar (Indianapolis, Ind.) fell in a tightly contested battle to Simona Potockova (Nova' Dubnica, Slovakia) and Yuki Oda (Kawasaki, Japan) by a score of 8-7 (10-8) in the No. 1 doubles.

Mu was able to get the Blue on the board in the No. 2 singles with a 7-6, 6-4 victory over Stutz. Her doubles partner Alviar dominated in the No. 5 singles with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Alli Laux (Onalaska, Wis.) to increase the Blue lead to 4-1. Gustavus Adolphus got two points back after Potockova defeated Markwart 6-0, 3-6, 6-3 in the No. 1 singles and Douglas earned a 7-6, 4-6 (10-8) in the No. 4 match over Chang.

After falling behind a set, Shen was able to battle back in the No. 3 singles with a clutch victory over Oda by a final score of 6-7, 6-2, 6-2. Tran fell by a score of 6-3, 6-2 in the No. 6 singles to Rachel Lindrud (North Oaks, Minn.), but the Blue held on as a team to win 5-4.

The Blue return home for the NEWMAC season opener to host Clark on Saturday, April 2 at 11:00 AM. Gustavus Adolphus will host MSU-Mankato on Saturday, March 26 at 8:30 AM.
