Wellesley Tennis Sweeps Clark 9-0 in NEWMAC Opener

WELLESLEY, Mass. – Wellesley tennis opened up the New England Women's and Men's Athletics Conference (NEWMAC) season with a dominant 9-0 victory over Clark (4-5, 0-1 NEWMAC) inside Dorothy Towne Fieldhouse. 

The Blue (4-3, 1-0 NEWMAC) got off to an early 3-0 lead after sweeping the doubles matches. The duo of senior Michelle Shen (Dallas, Texas) and sophomore Cristiana DeAgazio (Winchester, Mass.) earned the first victory after an 8-0 win in the No. 3 match over Nardin Sayoufi (Shelton, Conn.) and Maeve McEnroe (Marion, Mass.). A second 8-0 win was followed by sophomores Annissa Mu (Saratoga, Calif.) and Melinda Alviar (Indianapolis, Ind.), the No. 9 team ranked in the region, over Grayson LaCroix (Leicester, Mass.) and Andrea Osses Konig (Rego Park, N.Y.) in the No. 1 doubles. The Blue completed the sweep as seniors Michaela Markwart (Hanover, Mass.) and Libby Chang (San Marino, Calif.) handled their match over Hannah Russo (Bridgewater, Mass.) and Leilani Brown by a score of 8-3.

Shen kicked off the singles matches with an impressive 6-1, 6-0 win over Brown on the No. 3 court. In the No. 1 battle, Mu took care of business with a 6-0, 6-0 sweep over Russo. Markwart, The No. 25 ranked singles player in the Northeast, handled LaCroix in the No. 2 match by a score of 6-3, 6-0. Both Chang and Alviar had no trouble in their matches, both winning 6-0, 6-0 in the No. 4 and No. 5 respectively. DeAgazio closed out the day with a huge 6-1, 6-0 win over Sayoufi and secured the 9-0 team victory for Wellesley.

Up next, The Blue travel to NEWMAC rival Springfield on Tuesday, April 5 with the match beginning at 3:30 PM. Clark will return home to host Babson on Tuesday at 3:00 PM.
