No. 34 Blue Tennis Earns 9-0 Sweep Over Mount Holyoke

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. – The No. 34 Wellesley College tennis team extended its winning streak to four with a 9-0 road conference win over Mount Holyoke on Saturday. The Blue improve to 6-3 overall and 3-0 in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play. The Lyons drop to 2-5 overall and 1-1 in the NEWMAC.

Senior Michelle Shen (Dallas, Texas) and sophomore Cristiana DeAgazio (Winchester, Mass.) picked up the first win in the No. 3 doubles with an 8-0 shutout over Claudia Gonzalez-Vazquez (Cancun, Mexico) and Nikki Cheng (Honolulu, Hawaii). Following up in the No. 2 doubles was senior duo Libby Chang (San Marino, Calif.) and Michaela Markwart (Hanover, Mass.) with an 8-3 victory. The No. 10 ranked doubles group in the region, Sophomores Annissa Mu (Saratoga, Calif.) and Melinda Alviar (Indianapolis, Ind.), earned a 8-5 win over Annika Chai (London, England) and Annissa Aamoum (Dulles, Va.) on the No. 1 court. 

DeAgazio (6-0, 6-2) and Alviar (6-0, 6-1) kicked off the singles round with victories in the No. 6 and No. 5 matches. Mu had a tough battle against Shweta Kiran Cavale (Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India) but came out on top by a score of 6-3, 6-2. The next win was taken by Shen in the No. 4 match by Chang over Hannah Middleton (Pawcatuck, Conn.) by a score of 6-3, 6-3.

Two matches went into a tiebreaker set, starting with Markwart in the No. 1 match. After dropping the first set 6-3, Markwart battled back to win 6-4 and 10-4 in the tiebreaker over Chai. The final match of the day was handled by Shen in a 5-7, 7-6, 10-5 win over Aamoum in the No. 3 singles.

Wellesley is back in action tomorrow morning to host Skidmore at 10:00 AM. Mount Holyoke will play at Smith on Tuesday at 5:00 PM.
