Wellesley Tennis Rolls to 9-0 Victory Over Emerson

WELLESLEY, Mass. – The No. 34 Wellesley College tennis team defeated New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) opponent Emerson 9-0 on Tuesday. The Blue remain undefeated in the conference at 4-0 and improve to 7-4 overall. The Lions slip to 5-10 overall and 0-5 in the conference.

The Blue opened up with a dominant performance in doubles, allowing just two total points in three matches. Sophomore duo Annissa Mu (Saratoga, Calif.) and Melinda Alviar (Indianapolis, Ind.) took care of the No. 1 doubles with a 8-0 win over Maria Nikolishin (Russia) and Sophie Oglensky (Port Monmouth, N.J.). Seniors Libby Chang (San Marino, Calif.) and Michaela Markwart (Hanover, Mass.) also held command in the No. 2 doubles with an 8-1 victory. Finishing up the early session was senior Michelle Shen (Dallas, Texas) and sophomore Cristiana DeAgazio (Winchester, Mass.) with an 8-1 win over Ava Mirisola (Kingston, Mass.) and Gabrielle McGovern (Woodbridge, Conn.).

Wellesley carried over its momentum by sweeping all six singles matches over the Lions. Alviar kicked things off with a 6-0, 6-0 sweep in the No. 3 match over Mirisola. Mu and Chang followed with big 6-2, 6-0 and 6-2, 6-1 victories respectively. The No. 1 singles match began with Markwart winning a tough 6-4 battle over Nikolishin. Markwart then closed out the match with a solid 6-1 win in the second set. DeAgazio improved to 4-0 overall in the conference with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Oglensky in the No. 5 spot. To end the day, junior Celeste Tran (Los Altos, Calif.) fired off a 6-1, 6-1 victory and the Blue finished on top 9-0.

Wellesley will entertain Wheaton College on Saturday, April 16 at 10:00 AM. Emerson returns home for a match with Clark on Friday, April 15 at 3:45 PM.
