Blue Tennis Defeated by RPI, 6-3

LATHAM, N.Y. -  After winning all three doubles matches, RPI split singles to take a 6-3 win over Wellesley College tennis on Sunday at Tri-City Fitness.

The Engineers earned a sweep in doubles to take a commanding 3-0 lead. No. 1 and No. 2 doubles were both 8-3 wins in RPI's favor with sophomore Lorna Flores Gonzalez (Sugar Land, Texas) and first year Nikki Ridenour (Minneapolis, Minn.) defeating juniors Annissa Mu (Saratoga, Calif.) and Melinda Alviar (Indianapolis, Ind.) at No. 1 doubles and RPI's team of seniors Rani Jones (New Market, Md.) and Alex Mednikova (Belle Mead, N.J.) beating juniors Cristiana DeAgazio (Winchester, Mass.) and first year Emilee Pak (Chicago, Ill.) at No. 2 Doubles.

Wellesley fell 8-4 at the No. 3 doubles spot with the Blue represented by junior Jennifer Fan (Vancouver, British Columbia) and first year Isabella DeAgazio (Winchester, Mass.) against first years Sabrina Grewal (Raleigh, N.C.) and Masha Karach (Alpharetta, Ga.)

The Blue took back points at No. 2, 5, and 6. Alviar won 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2 over Mednikova, C. DeAgazio took No. 5 singles 6-0, 6-4 against sophomore Brooke Bauer (Butler, Pa.) and Fan grabbed a 6-3, 6-1 win over senior Krisia Flores Gonzalez (Sugar Land, Texas).

The Engineers earned victories at No. 1, 3, and 4 singles to seal the match. Ridenour defeated Mu 6-2, 6-2 at No. 1 and Pak fell 6-0, 6-3 to Jones at No. 4.

I. DeAgazio and L. Flores Gonzalez played a thrilling match at No. 3 singles with RPI taking the first set 6-1 before Wellesley fought back to even the match with a 6-4 second. It was ultimately Flores Gonzalez who got over the finish line with a 6-2 third set.

The Blue remain on the road March 11th at Colby while the Engineers next play in Florida for spring break on March 6 against Haverford.
