Blue Tennis Comes Up Short Against Bates, 6-3

LEWISTON, Maine - Despite big wins in doubles and singles from junior Cristiana DeAgazio (Winchester, Mass.) and first year Emilee Pak (Chicago, Ill.) Wellesley College tennis fell 6-3 to Bates on Saturday at Merrill Gymnasium. 

The Bobcats won two of three doubles matches to take an early lead. Sophomore Ava Lyon (Naples, Fla.) and Isabella Saul (Brooklyn, N.Y.) took the first point for Bates with an 8-3 win at No. 3 doubles over junior Jennifer Fan (Vancouver, British Columbia) and first year Isabella DeAgazio (Winchester, Mass.). 

The Bobcats doubled their lead with an 8-4 win at No. 1 doubles from senior Joanna Atwater (Short Hills, N.J.) and junior Ally Friedman (East Hampton, N.Y.) over Wellesley juniors Annissa Mu (Saratoga, Calif.) and Melinda Alviar (Indianapolis, Ind.).

The Blue took a point back with an 8-5 win at No. 2 doubles. C. DeAgazio and Pak earned the win for Wellesley over Bates seniors Grace Kennedy (New York, N.Y.) and Laura Littlefield (Ellicott City, Md.)

Atwater, Littlefield, and sophomore Drew Williams (Guilford, Conn.) all earned straight set wins for Bates at No. 2, 3, and 6 singles over Alviar, I. DeAgazio, and Fan. Pak picked up a 6-1, 6-1 win for the Blue at No. 4 singles against Kennedy.

C. DeAgazio overcame a first set deficit to stage a 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 comeback at No. 4 singles against senior Alexandra D'Aquino (Weston, Conn.).

The Bobcats took their final point at No. 1 singles. Friedman took a 7-5 set over Mu before the Wellesley junior fought back in a 6-2 second set. Friedman captured a convincing 6-0 third set to finish the match off for Bates.

Wellesley travels to Clark next Saturday at 12:00 PM to begin New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play. The Bobcats next play April 1 at 10:00 AM against Hamilton.
