No. 3 MIT Bests Wellesley Tennis, 9-0

WELLESLEY, Mass. - No. 3 MIT (9-3 Overall, 5-1 NEWMAC) earned a 9-0 New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC win over No. 40 Wellesley College tennis (6-5 Overall, 5-1 NEWMAC) ) on Tuesday evening.

MIT picked up all three points in doubles. Wellesley first years Isabella DeAgazio (Winchester, Mass.) and Emilee Pak (Chicago, Ill.) fell 8-1 to the No. 3 team in the region consisting of graduate student Caroline Vincent (Pacific Palisades, Calif.) and first year Alaina Kolli (Buffalo Grove, Ill.) at No. 2 doubles. Walleye junior Jennifer Fan (Vancouver, British Columbia) and first year Daniela Chiarini (Miami, Fla.) lost by the same score at No. 3 doubles.

MIT's No. 5 ranked team of senior Sarah Pertsemlidis (Coppell, Texas) and sophomore Jessica Lu (Austin, Texas) won 8-2 over juniors Annissa Mu (Saratoga, Calif.) and Melinda Alviar (Indianapolis, Ind.) at No. 1 doubles to complete the sweep.

Tech clinched the match with wins at No. 2 and 5 singles. Vincent earned a 6-1, 6-2 win over Alviar at No. 2 while senior Seraphin Castelino (Superior, Colo.) pushed past Pak 6-0, 6-4 at No. 5.

Mu fell 6-2, 6-3 to Persemlidis, the top ranked singles player in the Northeast Region, at No. 1 singles. I. DeAgazio battled hard in the second set but came up short for the Blue, falling 6-1, 7-5 to Lu at No. 3. Senior Sara Fernandez (South Miami, Fla.) was triumphant for the Engineers at No. 6 singles with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Fan.

Junior Cristiana DeAgazio (Winchester, Mass.) nearly picked up a win for Wellesley at No. 4 singles. After dropping a 6-2 first set, the junior evened the match with a 6-1 second set before falling 10-3 in the third set tiebreaker.

The Blue host Brandeis in a non-conference game on Saturday at 12:00 PM while the Engineers return home to face Tufts on Friday at 3:00 PM.
