Blue Tennis Beats Smith to Finish Regular Season, 8-1

WELLESLEY, Mass. - Wellesley College tennis closed out their regular season with an 8-1 victory against Smith in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) match outside on Saturday.

The Blue (7-8 Overall, 6-2 NEWMAC) raced out to a 3-0 lead with a sweep of the doubles' matches and later won five of six singles matches. Junior Miranda Gibson (Bethlehem, Pa.) recorded the lone point for the Pioneers (7-6 Overall, 4-4 NEWMAC) at No. 6 singles.

 First years Isabella DeAgazio (Winchester, Mass.) and Emilee Pak (Chicago, Ill.) took an early lead and never looked back in an 8-1 win at No. 2 doubles against senior Ashley Felix (El Paso, Texas) and sophomore Alexa Monos (Wyomissing, Pa.).

Wellesley also captured No. 1 doubles by a score of 8-3 with juniors Annissa Mu (Saratoga, Calif.) and Melinda Alviar (Indianapolis, Ind.) defeating sophomores Clara and Lili Goshgarian (Lake Forest, Ill.). No. 3 doubles was an 8-2 victory in favor of the Blue with the pairing of juniors Cristiana DeAgazio (Winchester, Mass.) and Jennifer Fan (Vancouver, British Columbia) overpowering sophomore Olivia Monos (Wyomissing, Pa.) and first year Dayana Caluna (Plainfield, N.J.).

Alviar pushed the Blue's lead to 4-0 with a strong 6-4, 6-2 win against C. Goshgarian at No. 2 singles. Shortly after C. DeAgazio polished off a 6-1, 6-1 winning effort against O. Monos to give Wellesley the victory. 

Pak took a straight sets 6-3, 6-2 match over A. Monos at No. 4 singles before Fan was victorious at No. 5 singles 6-2, 6-2 versus Felix.

Mu staged a comeback against L. Goshgarian at No. 1 singles. After neither player could gain separation in the first set, Goshgarian won 7-6 in a tiebreaker. Mu led early in the second and held on to take it 6-4. Mu was able to capitalize on important points in the third set tiebreaker, winning 10-8 for the Blue.

Gibson got Smith on the scoreboard at No. 6 singles against Wellesley first year Daniela Chiarini (Miami, Fla.) with a 6-3, 6-0.

The Blue and Pioneers will both await the NEWMAC playoff schedule to learn their NEWMAC Quarterfinals opponents.
