Wellesley Tennis Sweeps Past Salve Regina, 9-0

NEWPORT, R.I. – Wellesley College tennis earned a 9-0 NEWMAC sweep over host Salve Regina University on Friday afternoon at the Salve Regina University Tennis Courts.

The Blue found an early advantage in doubles play, opening with a 3-0 sweep of the Seahawks. Senior Jennifer Fan (Vancouver, British Columbia) and first year Dalia Khera (Houston, Texas) defeated senior Casey Farrell (Cumberland, R.I.) and first year Kaydin Pinto (Acushnet, Mass.), 8-3 at No. 3 doubles. Victories at No. 2 and No. 1 doubles then sent the Blue into singles play with the early lead. 

At No. 2 doubles, Wellesley sophomore Emilee Pak (Chicago, Ill.) and first year Suzanne Xu (Boyds, Md.) defeated Salve Regina sophomore Sadie Rieg (Carlisle, Pa.) and first year Madigan Murphy (York, Maine), 8-2. At No. 1 doubles, Blue seniors Annissa Mu (Saratoga, Calif.) and Melinda Alviar (Indianapolis, Ind.) topped Seahawks senior Alexa Stevens (Portsmouth, N.H.) and first year Stephanie Davis (Kinnelon, N.J.)

A pair of 6-0, 6-0 sweeps helped the Blue clinch the match early in singles play, as Alviar defeated Murphy in straight sets at No. 3 and first year Veda Madhusudan (Short Hills, N.J.) cruised past Pinto at No. 5. First year Lily Cade (Minneapolis, Minn.) moved the Wellesley advantage to 6-0 with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Graysen Scherer (Mystic, Conn.) at No. 6. 

Victories at No. 2, with Xu topping Murphy, 6-0, 6-1, and No. 1, where Mu defeated Stevens, 6-0, 6-4, put the Blue one match from the win. Pak then closed out the Wellesley victory with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Salve Regina junior Elena Murdock (Westerly, R.I.) at No. 4.

Wellesley will wrap up the NEWMAC regular season tomorrow with a 1:00 PM match at Babson. The Seahawks conclude the season tomorrow at 12:00 PM at MIT.
