Blue Track & Field Opens Season at UMass Boston

BOSTON, Mass. -- The Wellesley College track and field team opened the 2013-14 season by recording 11 top-10 finishes at the UMass-Boston Indoor Invitational at the Reggie Lewis Center on Saturday. 

The Blue were led by a pair of third place performances from senior
Alexandra Dunn and junior Kendra Waters. Dunn placed third overall in the mile, recording a time of 5:21.96, while Waters was third in the 500-meter dash, in a time of 1:21.95 

Four other Wellesley athletes recorded top-five finishes at the event, including sophomore
Sharon Ng, and first-years Sara Vannah, Meg Kelly, and Isabella Narvaez. Ng was fourth overall in the mile, finishing in 5:22.12, while Vannah placed fourth in the 5,000-meter run in 18:46.51. Kelly and Narvaez each recorded fifth place finishes at the event, with Kelly running an 11:09.52 in the 3,000-meter run, and Narvaez running a 1:02.35 in the 400 meter dash. 

Junior
Nicole Chui, seniors Doris Berman and Ali Grzywna, and first-year Emma Scalisi bolstered Wellesley's performance at the meet with top-10 finishes. Chui and Berman competed in the 5,000 with Chui finishing eighth in 19:10.69 and Berman adding a 19:38.57 to finish 10th. Grzywna was eighth in the 3,000, finishing in 11:23.69, while Scalisi was 10th in the triple jump, with a leap of 9.86m. 

Other highlights for the Blue included top-15 finishes from sophomore
Caitlin Bailey, senior Skye Roberts, first-year Edie Sharon, and senior Sheena Dupuy. Bailey was 12th in both the 60-meter hurdles and the 500-meter dash, finishing the 60 in 10.13, and the 500 in 1:24.81. Roberts (5:45.85) and Sharon (5:47.04) finished 13th and 15th in the mile, while Dupuy (4.49m) was 14th in the long jump. 

Rounding out the meet, Wellesley's 4x400m relay team (Ng, Hanlon, Waters, Sharon) placed eighth overall in 4:21.45, while program records were set in the shot put and in the 60-meter dash. First-year
Isabelle Herde established the program best mark of 9.79m in the shot put, while junior Kathleen Hanlon set a school record of 28.34 in the 60-meter dash. 

Wellesley track and field is back in action early in the spring semester. The Blue will next compete on January 18th at the Tufts University Invitational.
