Asare Earns All-American Honors; Ng Advances To Mile Finals at NCAAs

GRINNELL, Iowa – Wellesley College track & field sophomore Abena Asare (Berlin, N.J.) earned All-American honors in the Women's Long Jump and senior Sharon Ng (Sunnyvale, Calif.) advanced to the finals in the Women's Mile on day one of the 2016 NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field Championships at Grinnell College's Charles Benson Bear '39 Rec & Athletic Center.

Asare finished in fourth place in the Long Jump, leaping to a distance of 5.77m on her second attempt to become the first field athlete in Wellesley school history to earn All-American honors. The Wellesley school record holder in both the indoor and outdoor long jump, Asare recorded a jump of 5.77m to establish a new personal and Wellesley school indoor record.

In the Mile, Ng recorded a time of 5:01.16 to finish fourth in the first preliminary heat. With the top-three finishers in each heat automatically advancing to the finals, Ng had to wait until to the conclusion of the second heat before learning that she had advanced to tomorrow's final. The Wellesley senior finished with the eighth fastest time at the conclusion of the preliminaries to secure one of ten spots in the final.

The 2016 NCAA Division III Track & Field Championships will continue tomorrow, March 12, with Ng set to compete in the finals of the Mile at 2:40 PM. Live video is available at: http://www.ncaa.com/liveschedule/2016/03/12.
