Asare, Chen in Action as Blue Track & Field Opens NE DIII Championships

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- Sophomore Abena Asare (Berlin, N.J.) and first year Cathy Chen (Parsippany, N.J.) represented Wellesley College track & field on Friday afternoon on day two of the New England Division III Championships at Springfield College's Blake Track. 

Asare earned all-region honors in the Long Jump, finishing as the runner-up in the event with a leap of 5.67m. MIT sophomore Haley Strouf (Rice Lake, Wis.) finished just ahead of Asare with a jump of 5.69m to take the title. Asare also competed in the prelims of the 100m Dash, advancing to Saturday's final with a time of 12.81. Asare's eight points in the long jump currently have the Blue in seventh place overall in the team standings.

Also competing on Friday, Chen finished in fourteenth place in the prelims of the 100m Hurdles, racing to a new school record time of 16.19. Chen failed to advance to the finals in the event but she will return on Saturday to compete in the 400m Hurdles and 4 x 100 Relay.  

Wellesley will get competition underway at 10:30 AM on Saturday, May 7. For a list of Blue participants at this year's NE DIII Championships, check out the schedule below:
