Blue Track & Field In Action On Day One Of ECAC Championships

WESTFIELD, Mass. – Wellesley College track & field opened competition at the 2016 ECAC Track and Field Championships at the Jerry Gravel Track at Westfield State University on Wednesday afternoon. In all, ten members of the Blue will be in action over the next two days in the final meet for the team prior to the NCAA Championships.

Senior Priyanka Fouda (Wellesley, Mass.) was the lone Wellesley runner in the 5000m run on Wednesday. Fouda took third, taking All-ECAC honors and earning Wellesley six points with her time of 17:27.51. Her time will place her inside the top-50 in the NCAA in the event. 

Sophomore Abena Asare (Berlin, N.J.) was the first on the track on Wednesday, opening with trials in the women's 100m Dash. Asare ran to a time of 12.60, taking 13th overall. She failed to qualify for the 100m final on Thursday but will return tomorrow to compete in the long jump. Asare currently ranks 13th in NCAA DIII in the event.

Wellesley had three runners compete in the 3000m Steeplechase, as junior Sonja Cwik (La Canada, Calif.) was the leader of the Blue pack in 12th place with a time of 11:30.05. Cwik was followed by senior Alessandra Gavin (Annapolis, Md.) in 13th place (11:33.14), while junior Edie Sharon (Winchester, Mass.) took 15th in 11:36.19. 

Action continues tomorrow with Asare in the long jump, first year Cathy Chen (Parsippany, N.J.) in the 400m Hurdles, junior Mary Keenan (Boerne, Texas) and senior Sharon Ng (Sunnyvale, Calif.) in the 1500m run, junior Isabella Narvaez in the 200m and 400m, and the Blue in the 4 x 800m relay.
