Wellesley Track and Field Completes Record-Breaking Day at the Aloha Relays

BRUNSWICK, Maine-- Wellesley College track and field finished fourth overall in a record-breaking day at the Aloha Relays at Bowdoin College on Saturday.

Sophomore Tatenda Rameau (Syracuse, N.Y.) earned a DIII New England qualifier mark with a fourth place finish in the 200 meter dash with a time of 26.17. She was followed by first year Hana Sugioka (Newbury Park, Calif.) with a tenth place finish at 27.92. First year Rachel Berets (Belmont, Mass.) finished at 29.01, classmate Aiyana Smith (Brooklyn, N.Y.) completed in 29.20, and junior Yuriko Fukumura (Newton, Mass.) finished at 29.96.

Senior Isabella King (Cincinnati, Ohio) finished in fifth place in the 800 meter run with a career best and a DIII New England qualifier, clocking in a time of 2:20.61. Sophomore Elizabeth Wegman (East Sandwich, Mass.) finished 14th overall at 2:31.89.

Wellesley saw six new personal bests during the 1500 m run. Senior Taylor Fortnam (Portola Valley, Calif.) lead the Blue in the 1500m as she finished 10th overall at 4:59.91. First years Grace Cowles (Yarmouth, Maine) and April Chu (Fremont, Calif.) finished behind Fortnam, in the 13th and 16th slots with times of 5:03.47 for Cowles and 5:05.77 for Chu. First years Samara Shaz (New York, N.Y.) and Taylor Balfour (Rockville, Md.) recorded 5:07.59 and 5:42.66 times. Sophomore Fiona Harrigian (San Marino, Calif.) finished at 24 overall with her personal best of 5:18.74.

Senior Clare Salerno (Johnson, Vt.) competed in the 5000m, finishing ninth overall with a season best time of 19:58.15.

Both Berets and Junior Cathy Chen (Parsippany, N.J.) recorded DIII New England qualifier marks in the 100m hurdles. Berets finished in second place with a 15.69 time and Chen finished in fourth place at 15.84. Chen also finished in fourth place in the 400m hurdles at 1:09.25. Junior Jenn Harris (Vestal, N.Y.) followed behind, finishing in sixth overall with a 1:13.30 time.

The 4x800 relay team consisting of Fortnam, King, Chu, and First year Flora Naylor (San Antonio, Texas) earned a first place victory at 10:00.36. The 4x100 relay team of junior Yuriko Fukumura (Newton, Mass.), Sophomore Tatenda Rameau (Syracuse, N.Y.), Senior Priscilla Lee (Anaheim, Calif.), and Chen recorded a season best of 51.66 as they finished third overall.

Lee earned a DIII New England qualifying mark as she finished in second place with a 1.54m high jump. Rameau finished at third overall in the long jump at 5.03m. Junior Helen Andersen (Madison, N.J.) recorded a 10.62m mark to take fifth place, breaking a school record in the shot put. First year Shanez'e Johnson (Worcester, Mass.) earned a DIII New England qualifying mark, and broke a school record with her first place finish of 37.08m in the discus final. King finished fourth in the javelin throw with a season best 29.50m.

Wellesley will compete next Saturday, April 28 at the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Championships at Springfield College.
