Andersen Sets New Wellesley T&F Shot Put Record at NE DIII Championships

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. – Senior Helen Andersen (Madison, N.J.) earned All-Region honors and broke her own program record in the shot put for Wellesley College track & field on Saturday at the New England Division III Track & Field Championships.

Andersen finished fifth in the shot with a mark of 12.19m on her second attempt. Andersen's mark broke her own program record of 11.59m set at last weekend's NEWMAC Championships. Andersen also finished 17th in the Hammer this weekend with a mark of 39.22m on Friday afternoon. 

A week after setting a personal record (PR) in the steeplechase, sophomore Grace Cowles (Yarmouth, Maine) set a new PR in the 1500m, finishing 12th overall in 4:42.22. Junior Eva Paradiso (Burlington, Vt.) joined Cowles on the track, competing in the 5000m where she took 15th in 19:23.01.

After earning a 12th place finish in the 100m Hurdles on Friday, senior Cathy Chen (Parsippany, N.J.) returned to take 17th in the 400m Hurdles on Saturday. Chen finished the event in 1:07.77. Chen concluded the weekend as part of the Blue's 4 x 100m Relay, teaming with Yuriko Fukumura (Newton, Mass.), Aiyana Smith (Brooklyn, N.Y.), and Hana Sugioka (Newbury Park, Calif.) to take 21st (52.33). 

Qualified participants will represent the Blue next weekend, May 10-11, at the NEICAAA All-New England Championships at Southern Connecticut State University.
