Blue Volleyball Sweeps Twice to Open MIT Invitational

BOSTON, Mass. -- The Wellesley College volleyball team ran its season record to 7-0, picking up 3-0 wins over Simmons and Connecticut College on day one of the MIT Invitational. The matches were held at Simmons College.

Against Simmons, Wellesley came away with a 3-0 win using set scores of 25-10, 25-21, and 25-21, while in the win over Conn., the Blue picked up wins of 25-22, 25-17, and 25-14.

In the Simmons match, Wellesley spread the offense around, with eight players recording four or more kills. Megan Mills and Courtney Lang led the way with six each, while Mills added four blocks and Lang added eight digs. 

Brooke Fieldman
notched an 11-dig, 4-kill effort in the win over the Sharks, while Taylor Jais recorded a team-high 12 digs. Hilary Ayers picked up 18 assists, with Maddie Koh adding 15.

Against Conn., Sydney Carfagno hit .400, recording 12 kills on 25 swings, with just two errors. She also added eight digs. Filling out a balanced attack, Kellyn O'Brady, Caitlin Laughlin, Sierra Weingartner and Fieldman each added five kills.

Ayers and Koh again split the setting duties, with Ayers picking up 13 assists, and Koh adding 12. Both setters also played well on defense, as Koh recorded nine digs and Ayers added seven.

Defensively, Traci Hamanaka led the way with a game-high 16 digs, while O'Brady added 14 of her own. Weingartner and Laughlin were solid for the Blue at the net, picking up three blocks each.

Wellesley is back in action tomorrow, finishing up the MIT Invitational at MIT. The Blue open with a 12:00pm match against Bates, and then play Roger Williams at 2:00pm.
