Volleyball Wins Twice to Open Emory Invitational

ATLANTA, Ga. -- The Wellesley College volleyball team went 2-0 on day one of the 2013 Emory Invitational. The Blue opened the day with a 3-0 victory over Emory & Henry and then posted their second sweep of the day with a 3-0 win over Covenant. The wins improve Wellesley to 11-1 on the season. 

Against Emory & Henry, Wellesley handed the Wasps (7-2) just their second loss of the season, using set scores of 25-16, 25-21, and 25-23.

Sydney Carfagno led the Blue attack, recording 12 kills on 18 swings with just two errors. She also picked up six digs and a game-high four blocks. Caitlin Laughlin recorded a seven-kill, eight-dig performance, while Kellyn O'Brady picked up eight digs with five kills. Rounding out the hitting, Courtney Lang recorded four kills, not making an error in 10 attempts, while adding three blocks. 

Hilary Ayers paced Wellesley offense, recording 22 total assists, while Maddie Koh picked up 11 helpers. Traci Hamanaka was the team digs leader, finishing the match with 10 total.Kira Jordan bolstered the Blue's box score with three blocks in the match. 

For Emory & Henry, Hannah Doss registered a match-high 14 kills while Tristen Pennington and Nicole Tesh had nine and eight kills, respectively. Autumn Roe recorded 18 assists to captain the offense.

In the second match of the day, Wellesley dispatched Covenant (6-4) using set scores of 25-11, 25-9, and 25-18.

Brooke Fieldman headed up the Wellesley offense, tying a career-high with 10 total kills. O'Brady and Carfagno also hit well, combing for 15 kills and just one error. O'Brady added nine digs in the win, while Carfagno picked up seven.

Also against Covenant, Hamanaka topped the Blue's defense with 15 digs, while also picking up five assists. Koh and Ayers split primary setting duties, with Koh picking up 18 and Ayers adding 17 assists with four aces. Lindsey Menichella led Wellesley at the net, recording a pair of blocks in the win. 

Covenant was paced by five kills from Cora Schroeder, and four each from Anna Swain and Hannah Rogers. Estes Carlson recorded a team-high nine digs, while Stephanie Kirkpatrick picked up 13 assists. 

Wellesley returns to action tomorrow morning with two more matches. The Blue open the day with a 10:30am clash against Maryville (Tenn.), and then play host and fourth-ranked Emory, at 3:00pm.
