Wellesley Volleyball Goes 2-0 to Open Seven Sisters Championships

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. – The Wellesley College volleyball team went 2-0 on day one of the 2013 Seven Sisters Championship, hosted by Mount Holyoke College. The Blue opened the day with a 3-1 win over Bryn Mawr, and then recorded a 3-0 sweep of Vassar.

Wellesley moves to 20-2 on the season with today's wins.

Against Bryn Mawr, the Blue recorded big wins in the first and third sets, with final game scores of 25-12, 24-26, 25-8, 25-19. Later in the day, Wellesley cruised to a 3-0 sweep of Vassar, using set scores of 25-18, 25-13, 25-18.

In the Bryn Mawr match, three players reached double figures in kills to lead the Blue to the 3-1 win. Leading the offensive effort was junior Sydney Carfagno who recorded a match-high 12 kills while also adding 13 digs to complete her eighth double-double of the season. Junior Caitlin Laughlin and senior Kellyn O'Brady each had 11 kills, while senior Traci Hamanaka chipped in with a match-best 20 digs. Splitting the setting duties, senior Hilary Ayers and first-year Maddie Koh combined for 35 assists.

For Bryn Mawr, junior Samantha Abbott had nine kills, while sophomore Rachel Ofili added eight kills and four blocks.

Against Vassar, Carfagno once again led the offensive effort for Wellesley as she posed eight kills and a match-best 11 digs. Ayers tallied 10 assists and Koh added nine, while classmate Megan Mills posted six kills in the winning effort.

For Vassar, junior Taylor Mosley had a squad-best eight kills and eight digs. Jessie Ditmore added seven kills as well for the Brewers, which also saw first-year Gabby record a match-high 15 assists.

Wellesley and Smith both went 2-0 on day one and will meet tomorrow at 11:30am in what could be the Championship match-up. Host Mount Holyoke recorded a 1-1 record on day one, while Vassar and Bryn Mawr each went 0-2.

After the 11:30am Smith match, Wellesley will take on Mount Holyoke at 2:00pm.
