Wellesley Volleyball Goes 1-2 Against Regionally-Ranked Opponents at HOF Tournament

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. -- The Wellesley College volleyball team went 1-2 against tough competition at the 2013 Hall of Fame Invitational this weekend. Wellesley picked up a 3-0 victory over Bowdoin (ranked #5 regionally), but suffered a 3-1 loss to #6 Amherst and a 3-0 loss to #2 Williams.

With this weekend's results, Wellesley now holds a 25-4 overall record. Coming in to this weekend, the Blue were ranked third in New England in the initial NCAA Regional rankings of the season. 

On Friday against Amherst, Wellesley suffered a 3-1 loss, with set scores of 23-25, 25-21, 25-19, and 25-15. The Blue hit well in the first set, but were hampered by hitting woes in the final three. 

Sydney Carfagno
led the Blue with 17 kills and 16 digs, while also recording five blocks and three aces. Caitlin Laughlin also had a solid night, racking up 10 kills with four blocks. Megan Mills rounded out the Blue attack with six kills. Traci Hamanaka recorded a match-high 22 digs, while Maddie Koh (24 assists) and Hilary Ayers (17 assists) handled setting duties. 

On Saturday, Wellesley rebounded to post a 3-0 sweep over Bowdoin. The Blue hit a combined .253 with just eight total errors in the match, earning the 25-21, 25-13, 25-20, victory.

Carfagno picked up a team-high 12 kills in the match, while Mills added six and Laughlin picked up four. Hamanaka recorded 15 digs, while Koh and Ayers combined for 22 assists.

Rounding out the weekend, Wellesley fell flat against Williams, in a 3-0 loss. The Blue hit just .160, while Williams used a .326 clip to take the match using set scores of 25-13, 25-16, and 25-16. 

Laughlin and Carfagno picked up eight kills each in the match, while
Kellyn O'Brady recorded seven and Courtney Lang added six. Hamanaka rounded out her weekend with 10 more digs, while Koh and Ayers recorded a combined 23 assists. 

Wellesley is back in action on Tuesday evening, hosting Coast Guard at 7:00pm. The game will serve as senior day for Wellesley's class of 2014.
