Wellesley Volleyball Swept by Emerson, 3-0

WELLESLEY, Mass. - Junior libero Caroline Davis (Orlando, Fla.) notched 15 digs for Emerson College as they swept Wellesley College 3-0 (25-16, 25-17, 25-15) on Tuesday at the Dorothy Towne Fieldhouse. 

Senior Caroline Bond (Macungie, Penn.) had 19 assists and four players had at least four kills for Emerson (9-1 Overall, 2-1 NEWMAC). Senior captain TylerBell Smith (Frisco, Texas) led the Blue (4-8 Overall, 0-4 NEWMAC) with eight kills. Mikayla Tansil (Warren, Mich.) recorded 23 assists and Rachel Xu (Beijing, China) secured 12 digs.

The match opened with a Wellesley kill from junior Kate Salembier (Sierra Madre, Calif.). Wellesley led as late as 5-4 before the Lions won seven of the next nine points. The Lions pulled away late in the set, finishing with 14 kills and a .393 hitting percentage.

The second set again began close, with the score knotted at 7-7. A six point run set the wheels in motion for Emerson's offense who ran the score up to 19-11 before the Blue regrouped. Despite a late run by Wellesley that included two service aces from Xu the Lions sealed a 25-17 set.

Emerson's strong defense and few errors were critical in the third set. A five point run gave the Lions a 12-6 lead they would never relinquish as the Lions finished off a 25-15 set.

Wellesley finishes their home stretch with a non-conference game against New England College on Thursday at 6 PM. Emerson will host Coast Guard Saturday in NEWMAC action from the Bobbi Brown and Steven Plofker Gym at 12 PM.
