Blue Volleyball Downed by MIT, 3-0

WELLESLEY, Mass. – Senior Consecrata Rozario (Cary, N.C.) had 13 kills and a .722 hitting percentage to give No. 20 MIT a 3-0 (25-22, 25-14, 25-19) NEWMAC win over Wellesley College volleyball at Dorothy Towne Fieldhouse on Tuesday night.

The Engineers (18-3 Overall, 5-1 NEWMAC) had a team hitting percentage of .347, with Rozario, junior Lauren Keller (Albuquerque, N.M.), and sophomore Claire Underwood (Yorba Linda, Calif.) all earning at least 10 kills. Senior Emily Cheng (Sunnyvale, Calif.) collected 40 assists for MIT and junior Ottavia Personeni (Bethesda, Md.) had a match-high 14 digs.

First year Kate Giang (Corte Madera, Calif.) led the Blue (8-7 Overall, 2-4 NEWMAC) with 12 kills, in addition  to nine digs. Classmate Emily Goldstein (Houston, Texas) added six kills and three blocks. Sophomore libero Kaija Kunze-Hoeg (Eagan, Minn.) and first year Mary Beeler (Menlo Park, Calif.) both had double-digit digs for Wellesley.

Wellesley led 17-12 in the first set before MIT raced back to tie the match at 19-19. The Engineers won five of the final seven points, with consecutive kills from Keller closing out a 25-22 set.

MIT took over in the latter stage of the second set, winning the final seven points with a .324 hitting percentage for the set.

The Engineers' attacks continued to be effective in the third set, with 15 kills and an astronomical .520 hitting percentage. The set was tied at 12-12 when MIT kicked its offense into high gear, closing the match on a kill from Underwood.

The Blue take a trip to Regis for a non-conference game at 7:00 PM on Thursday, October 12 while the Engineers compete in a tri-match with WPI and Bridgewater State on Saturday, October 14.
