Wellesley Volleyball Falls to Clark, 3-1

WORCESTER, Mass. – Senior Camille Flurry (Athens, Ga.) tallied 15 kills, six blocks, and a .452 hitting percentage to help Clark defeat Wellesley College volleyball 3-1 (25-21, 23-25, 25-13, 25-11) in a NEWMAC match at Hurst Courts on Saturday.

In addition to Flurry, senior Sheyenne Williams (Bloomfield, N.J.) added 12 kills and six blocks for the Cougars (12-7 Overall, 3-4 NEWMAC) and classmate Sofia Scherrer del Llano (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico) had 10 kills and digs. Sophomore Yumeng Liu (Beijing, China) led Clark with 18 digs and first year Julia Dopazo (Miami, Fla.) recorded 28 assists.

First year Kate Giang (Corte Madera, Calif.) had a match-high 21 kills in addition to 10 digs for the Blue (8-9 Overall, 2-5 NEWMAC). Sophomore libero Kaija Kunze-Hoeg (Eagan, Minn.) led all players with 21 digs while first year Madeline Zornek (Orlando, Fla.) had a double-double with 25 assists and 13 digs.

The Cougars recorded 16 kills in a winning first set. After Clark won the first five points of the match, Wellesley won six straight to take an 8-6 lead. After a back and forth middle of the set, the Cougars built up a five point lead at 23-18, and closed out a 25-21 set on a kill from Flurry.

The teams traded points for the first half of the second set before Wellesley grabbed a three point lead at 13-10. The Cougars tied the set at 18-18 and the score was still knotted at 23-23 before Giang had back-to-back kills for the Blue.

Clark won eight of the final 10 points in a convincing 25-13 third set that saw 13 kills and a .379 hitting percentage for the Cougars.

The fourth set was similar to the third, with Clark hitting .500 and never trailing at any point. A block from Flurry and junior Camille Sterling (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) finished off a 25-11 set.

Both teams next play on Tuesday, October 17 at 7:00 PM with Wellesley hosting Springfield and Clark welcoming Babson.
