Blue Cross Country Edges Hosts To Take Bowdoin Invitational Title

BRUNSWICK, Maine – Wellesley College cross country placed five runners in the top-ten to win the team title at the 2016 Bowdoin Cross Country Invitational on Saturday afternoon at Bowdoin College. Wellesley senior Mary Kreidel (Boerne, Texas) placed second overall with a time of 22:36.0, finishing 05.3 seconds behind the race's individual winner, junior Sarah Kelley (Winnetka, Ill.) of Bowdoin.

The Blue and Bowdoin each placed five runners in the top-ten, with Wellesley edging the host Polar Bears for the title, finishing with 27 points. Bowdoin took second with 28 points, followed by Endicott in third with 89. Maine (106), Husson (133), Maine Maritime (185) and Maine-Presque Isle (218) rounded out the field of seven teams. 

Seniors Sonja Cwik (La Canada, Calif.), Edie Sharon (Winchester, Mass.) and Sara Vannah (Amherst, Mass.) joined their classmate Kreidel at the front, finishing in fourth, fifth and sixth, respectively.  Cwik crossed the line in 22:57.0, Sharon finished the course in 23.00.1 and Vannah added a time of 23:12.3.

First year Eva Paradiso (Burlington, Vt.) was the final Wellesley runner in the top-ten, completing the Wellesley score in tenth with a time 23:47.1. Junior Taylor Fortnam (Portola Valley, Calif.) wasn't far behind, taking 11th in 23:52.0.

Senior Alice Zhou (Sunnyvale, Calif.), first year Elizabeth Lambert (Kensington, Md.), sophomore Catherine Xie (Newton, Mass.), junior Clare Salerno (Johnson, Vt.) and first year Fiona Harrigian (San Marino, Calif.) completed the Wellesley team of 11 runners in Saturday's race. Zhou was 24th (25.38.7), Lambert took 26th (26:03.5), Xie added a 28th (26:03.5) place finish, while Salerno was 31st (26:23.0) and Harrigian finished in 34th (26:45.5).

Wellesley cross country will take next weekend off before continuing the season on Saturday, October 8 at the NEICAAA All-New England Championships.
