Wellesley Basketball's Aguirre Earns Second NEWMAC All-Conference Selection

Senior Zojajha Ayub Named to NEWMAC Sportsmanship Squad

WESTWOOD, Mass. -- The New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) announced the 2018-19 Women's Basketball All-Conference and Postseason awards on Tuesday and Wellesley College junior Caitlin Aguirre has been named to the All-Conference Second Team for the second straight season. 

Aguirre was seventh in the NEWMAC in scoring, averaging a career-high 13.3 points per game while leading the Blue to the team's first NEWMAC postseason appearance since 2014. The junior guard also set a career-high in assists per game at 2.4 while starting all 23 games on the Wellesley schedule and averaging 35 minutes per game.

Aguirre earned NEWMAC Offensive Athlete of the Week honors at the start of the season after garnering Tournament MVP honors while leading the Blue to the title at the USJ Tip-off Tournament. Aguirre topped the 20-point plateau on three ocassions during the season, scoring 20 in a season-opening win over Fitchburg St., a season-high 22 versus Regis on December 30, and 20 on January 23 at Clark. 

The NEWMAC also recognized the eleven women's basketball student-athletes that were named to the All-Sportsmanship Team. The award is intended to recognize one student-athlete from each team, in every sport that best demonstrates the ideals of the NEWMAC and its Code of Conduct, regardless of his/her overall performance or statistics for the season. Senior Zojajha Ayub (Belle Mead, N.J.) was this year's selection for the Blue. The complete list of NEWMAC women's basketball honorees are listed below. 

Wellesley basketball finished the season with an 8-15 overall record (5-11 NEWMAC), earning the No. 7 seed in the NEWMAC postseason tournament.
