Race Schedule

Saturday's racing:

Simmons College, Smith College, Wellesley College, and Tufts University Women's Crews will compete on the Malden River Saturday, April 23, 2011 in the 4th Annual Malden River Spirit Regatta.  The Tufts University Varsity Women's Eight won the inaugural event in a nail biting finish in 2008.  Smith College surged out to an early lead and rowed to a comfortable seven second victory in the 2009 grand final, over a determined Tufts crew, and Simmons College rowed away to a determined 5.5 second win over Smith in the 2010 championship race.  The Malden River Spirit Award is emblematic of supremacy in the race series which has been held annually on the Malden River since 2002.  The award represents the tradition of competitive spirit and sportsmanship exemplified by the coaches and athletes of the three guest schools as well as the athletes from Tufts, and has been commissioned and donated by the Tufts Coaching Staff.

Saturday is also Senior Day at Shoemaker Boathouse and the final home race for the class of 2011.  Senior women's crew co-captains, Rachel Steward and Bianca Velayo will be making their final racing sojourns on the Malden River Saturday morning along with classmates Catherine Bowlus, Barb Franco, Alison Hodgkin, Lindsay Hull, Jenna Lohmann, and Jordy Wolfand  Men's co-captains Daniel (DJ) Ambrozavitch and Eugene Kim, and teammates Ryan Flood and Alex Ross will also be honored. Racing begins at 9:30 AM.

At the conclusion of today's racing stay and enjoy the cup presentation and help us all say thank you to our seniors (and their families) for four terrific years as Tufts JUMBOS!

The Park at River's Edge:

The Park at River's Edge is a world-class, 10-acre riverfront park with over 1/3 mile of frontage along the Malden River. The Park provides a great environment for tenants of the offices, residents of the luxury housing, Tufts University rowers and competitors, and anyone who enjoys a varied riverfront park environment.

The Park, designed by JP Shadley Associates, includes a picturesque mixture of open parkland with trees, shrubs and flowers. In constructing the Park over 8000 plants were added including approximately 2000 plants in the 1.5 acres of wetlands which have been created or restored. The Park is irrigated with well water.

The lighted Park features 100 yards of sculptured granite seat walls at multiple overlooks from which to view the river and other Park vistas. There are also great views from many of the 44 MWH Helmstadt Benches strategically located throughout the Park.  For further information on the River's Edge Park please refer to the following web site:  http://www.riversedgema.com/park.html .

The William A. Shoemaker Boathouse:

A highlight of the Park is the William A. Shoemaker Boathouse which houses the university's men's and women's crew teams.  The boathouse, which opened in 2006, was designed by Peterson Architects of Cambridge, MA. During the 2010 spring racing season, Tufts has hosted several regattas at River's Edge, which included as participants such colleges as Bates, Mount Holyoke, New Hampshire, Vermont, and Wesleyan.
